What Is Card on File?
Card on File lets your business securely save a customer's credit card information in Thryv Business Center for use on future transactions. Instead of asking customers to re-enter their payment details every time they book an appointment or pay an invoice, their card is already saved and ready to charge, making checkout faster for them and follow-up billing easier for you.
Card on File is available to any Thryv Business Center account that is connected to a payment processor. Without an active payment processor connection, credit cards cannot be saved to your vault. You can easily connect ThryvPay, to learn how to connect ThryvPay to Thryv Business Center, see Getting Started with ThryvPay.
To add a card on file, a customer must notify your business directly and provide their credit card information for the next transaction. A future update will allow customers to add their own card to the system without contacting your business first.
How Are Customer Credit Cards Stored Securely?
Card on File does not store sensitive credit card data inside Thryv Business Center. When a customer's card is saved, the card information is encrypted and stored on your payment processor's secure servers, not inside Thryv Business Center itself. Thryv Business Center never holds raw card data at any point in the process.
Each saved card is associated with a specific customer record in Thryv Business Center. Customers with a default card on file will see a confirmation at the bottom of their payment emails that reads: "Your card ending in 0000 is saved on file for future payments." This gives customers visibility into what is stored and confirms the card is active for future use.
If you cancel your Thryv Business Center subscription, your stored credit cards will no longer be accessible. Card data is tied to your active account and payment processor connection. Canceling your subscription ends access to all cards saved in your vault.
Managing Multiple Cards and Default Settings
Thryv Business Center allows multiple credit cards to be saved and associated with a single customer record. There is no limit to the number of cards a customer can have on file. When a customer has multiple cards saved, they can choose which card to use at the time of each transaction.
One card per customer can be designated as the default card. The default card is the one automatically selected when a customer is making a payment. If a customer has multiple cards on file, the default card will be pre-selected at checkout unless the customer chooses a different card for that transaction.
Bulk importing of credit cards is not available in Thryv Business Center. Each card must be added individually. If you are connected to a third-party payment processor such as Square, credit card information from that platform will not carry over into Thryv Business Center during the sync. Only customer contact information is synced, not payment data.
What Can You Pay for With Card on File?
Customers can use a saved card on file to pay for online appointment bookings and invoices inside Thryv Business Center. When a customer has a card on file, the saved card will be available as a payment option at checkout for both of these transaction types.
Recurring payments are also supported with Card on File. To use recurring payments, ThryvPay must be selected as your payment gateway inside Thryv Business Center. If you are connected to a different payment gateway, recurring payments will not be available. To learn how to set up recurring payments with ThryvPay, see Recurring Payments.
Card on File is not currently compatible with Mobile QuickPay. If you are processing a payment through Mobile QuickPay, the customer's saved card will not be available as a payment option for that transaction type. Mobile QuickPay payments must be processed separately.
Requirements and Compatibility
Card on File is available with all payment gateways connected to Thryv Business Center. You do not need to use a specific payment gateway to save customer cards, with one exception: recurring payments require ThryvPay as your selected payment gateway.
An active payment processor connection is required to use Card on File. If your Thryv Business Center account is not connected to a payment processor, you will not be able to save customer credit cards to your vault, even if you have previously collected payment outside of Thryv Business Center.
If you are syncing customer data from a third-party payment processor such as Square, only customer contact information will carry over into Thryv Business Center. Credit card data from third-party payment processors does not sync into Thryv Business Center. Cards must be added individually after the sync is complete.
