Adding Tags to your Clients
Before tags can be used to target your desired audience for marketing, you'll need to create them first! Tags can be created on any contact card in Business Center.
- Tags can be added upon client creation. Simply scroll down to the section that says Add Tags, and you can type your tags in there. Once a tag is created, it will suggest it the next time you go to add a tag. It is important that tags stay consistent throughout your CRM. For example, in this example, "OilChange" and "Oil-Change" would be considered separate tags.
- Tags can also be added to the client card after the client has been created. Navigate to the contact card you would like to tag and click on edit (pencil icon) on the top left side. Scroll down to the section that says Add Tags and add the desired tag.
- Tags can also be added in bulk from your Contact List. First, use multi-select to select all of the contacts you would like to tag. Then click on Manage Tags to add that tag to all of those clients simultaneously.
Using Tags for Automated Campaigns
Now that we have our tags created, let's use them to direct our automated campaigns to a specific audience. It is a great idea to use tags to target automated campaigns to make sure that clients receive automated follow-ups that are relevant to them. They are put to great use when reminding clients about a recurring service, reminding clients of annual follow-ups (or other timing schedules), offering upgrades at regular intervals to clients who would be interested, or filtering your review requests to only go to desired clients, just to name a few examples.
To target a campaign by tags, click Edit on Recipient Settings. Change the radio button to select Filtered and then check By Tag. Then select the tag you would like to filter by. Once you start typing, a drop-down will appear containing all of the available tags. Select the tag you would like to use from that drop-down. You can select multiple tags. Remember, the tag has to be created by being added to at least one client first, before it will appear here to be selected.
Once your automated campaign is filtered by tag, only clients who have that tag will receive the campaign.
Using Tags for Announcements
Tags can also be used to create an audience for your announcements. This method is perfect for clients who are enrolled in a monthly newsletter, when you want to cross-promote a different service than one clients have previously purchased, or announce a new service to clients who you feel would be interested based on past interactions, just to name a few examples.
First, create the announcement as normal. For help with creating the announcement, Click Here for a guide to sending announcements by email, and Click Here for a guide to sending them through text message. Once the campaign is created, click on send. After choosing whether to send through email or text message, you will then be prompted to select the tag groups that will receive the campaign. Rather than selecting All Clients, scroll through your created tags to determine which group or groups (multiple can be selected, but don't worry, a client with both tags won't receive it twice!) you would like to receive the campaign.
The main difference between announcements and automated campaigns is that announcements are sent only at the time that you send them. That means that if you tag a client after a campaign has been sent, they won't automatically receive it. If you want that client to receive the campaign, you would need to go back and re-send the announcement.
For Accounts with over 20,000 Contacts
Thryv can only send an announcement to 20,000 contacts at a time. If you want to send an announcement to more than 20,000 clients, you will need to create separate tags and send the announcement in batches. To create the tags, the most efficient way is to import a spreadsheet of the clients you want to send to. Click Here for a guide on importing your clients. Note: This method can be used even if the contacts you are updating are not new. Make sure that when you import you select the option to overwrite existing contacts, and this will add the tag to them. When creating your tags, make sure the tags are unique so you can distinguish the different batches, but similar enough you will be able to search for them easily. Also, make sure that each tag is used on no more than 20,000 contacts.
Once you have the tags created, you will need to Clone your campaign one time for each unique tag. For example if you have 60,000 clients, you would need 3 tag groups (20,000 each) and therefore would need to clone your campaign twice to create 3 copies of the same campaign. To clone a campaign, click on the tri-dots on the far right, then select Clone. If you intend the message to be identical to the original, all that's left is to click Done in the orange box on the top left. Repeat this step for as many batches as needed for the campaign.
Once you have cloned the campaign and created enough unique tags, you are ready to send your announcement. Send each tag group an announcement, and use the cloned copy for the next tag group until all are sent. Keep in mind each campaign will have separate reporting under View Stats so you will need to view them individually to measure the success of your campaign.
Now that you've mastered sending targeted campaigns, make sure you use Thryv's tools available to measure the success of those campaigns. Click Here for a guide to Thryv's advanced delivery metrics to track the progress of your marketing.
