Why Use Tags to Target Your Marketing in Thryv Business Center
Sending the same marketing message to every client in your database means some clients receive campaigns that are not relevant to them — and relevant clients may be missed entirely. Tags in Thryv Business Center™ let you segment your client list into specific groups so your automated campaigns and announcements reach only the clients who should receive them. Tags help you remind clients about recurring services, follow up at the right intervals, offer upgrades to clients most likely to be interested, and filter review requests to go only to the clients you choose.

How to Add Tags to Your Clients
Tags must be added to at least one client before they can be used to filter campaigns. Tags can be added to clients in three ways: during client creation, by editing an existing client card, or in bulk from your Client List. It is important to keep tag names consistent across your client records. For example, "OilChange" and "Oil-Change" are treated as two separate tags in Thryv Business Center. Using inconsistent tag names will split your audience and cause clients to be missed when filtering campaigns.
Add a Tag During Client Creation
When creating a new client record, scroll down to the Add Tags section of the client creation form and type the name of the tag you want to add. After a tag has been created and assigned to at least one client, Thryv Business Center will suggest that tag automatically the next time you type in the Add Tags field.
The screenshot below shows the Add Tags section of the client creation form in Thryv Business Center. The Add Tags field appears near the bottom of the form as a text input. Previously created tags appear as suggestions in a dropdown as you type.
Add a Tag to an Existing Client Card
To add a tag to a client who already exists in your client list, open the client's contact card and click the pencil icon in the top left of the card to open the edit view. Scroll down to the Add Tags section and type the name of the tag you want to add.

Add Tags to Multiple Clients at Once from the Client List
To add a tag to multiple clients at the same time, go to your Client List and use multi-select to check the boxes next to all of the clients you want to tag. Then click Add Tags in the action bar that appears. In the popup window, type the name of the tag you want to add and click Add Tags to apply the tag to all selected clients at once.
The screenshot below shows an animation of bulk tag adding from the Client List in Thryv Business Center. Multiple client checkboxes are selected, the Add Tags button appears in the action bar, a tag name is typed in the popup window, and the Add Tags button is clicked to apply the tag to all selected clients simultaneously.
How to Use Tags for Automated Campaigns
Once tags have been added to your clients, you can use them to filter automated campaigns so that only clients with a specific tag receive the campaign. Filtering automated campaigns by tag is useful for reminding clients about a recurring service, following up at annual or other timed intervals, offering service upgrades to clients who have shown interest, and filtering review requests to go only to clients you select.
To filter an automated campaign by tag, open the automated campaign and click Edit on the Recipient Settings section. Change the recipient selection to Filtered using the radio button, then check By Tag. Click in the tag search field and begin typing the name of the tag you want to use. A dropdown will appear showing all available tags that match your search. Select the tag from the dropdown. You can select multiple tags to include clients who have any of the selected tags. A tag must already be assigned to at least one client before it will appear in the tag dropdown.
The screenshot below shows an animation of an automated campaign being filtered by tag in Thryv Business Center. The Recipient Settings section is opened, the Filtered radio button is selected, the By Tag checkbox is checked, and a tag name is typed into the search field with the matching tag selected from the dropdown.
After the tag filter is applied, only clients who have that tag assigned to their client record will receive the automated campaign. Clients without the tag will not receive the campaign regardless of other campaign settings.
How to Use Tags for Announcements
Tags can also be used to select the audience for an announcement. Targeting announcements by tag is useful for sending a monthly newsletter to enrolled clients, cross-promoting a service to clients who have purchased a related service, or announcing a new offering to clients whose past interactions suggest they would be interested.
To send an announcement to a specific tag group, create the announcement first. For step-by-step instructions on creating an announcement, see How to Send an Announcement by Email in Thryv Business Center. After the announcement is created, click Send. On the send screen, scroll through your created tags and select the tag group or groups you want to receive the announcement instead of selecting All Clients. If a client has more than one of the selected tags, the client will receive the announcement only once.
The screenshot below shows an animation of an announcement being sent to a specific tag group in Thryv Business Center. The Send button is clicked on the completed announcement, the tag selection screen appears, and one or more tags are selected from the list instead of All Clients before the announcement is sent.
Announcements are sent only at the moment you click Send — they are not sent automatically to clients who receive the tag afterward. If you add a tag to a client after an announcement has already been sent, that client will not receive the announcement automatically. To send the announcement to that client, re-send the announcement separately.
How to Send Announcements to More Than 20,000 Contacts Using Tags
Thryv Business Center can send an announcement to a maximum of 20,000 contacts per send. If your target audience exceeds 20,000 clients, you will need to divide the audience into separate tag groups and send the announcement in batches, one tag group at a time. Each tag group must contain no more than 20,000 contacts.
The most efficient way to create tags for large batches is to import a spreadsheet of the clients you want to include in each batch. For instructions on importing clients, see How to Import Clients into Thryv Business Center. When importing, select the Overwrite option to update existing client records with the new tag — this method works even if the contacts are already in your client list. Use unique tag names for each batch so you can distinguish them, but keep the names similar enough that you can search for them easily.
The screenshot below shows the import settings screen in Thryv Business Center with the Overwrite option selected. The import screen displays options for handling existing contacts, including the Overwrite option which updates existing records rather than skipping them. A tag column is visible in the import preview showing the tag that will be applied to imported contacts.
After creating your tag groups, clone your announcement once for each additional batch. For example, if your audience is 60,000 clients, you need three tag groups of 20,000 each, which means you need to clone the announcement twice to create three copies. To clone an announcement, click the three-dot menu on the far right of the announcement in your campaign list, then select Clone. If the message should be identical to the original, click Done in the orange confirmation bar at the top left. Repeat the clone step for each additional batch.
The screenshot below shows an animation of an announcement being cloned in Thryv Business Center. The three-dot menu is clicked on the far right of the announcement row, the Clone option is selected, and the Done button is clicked in the orange confirmation bar at the top left to confirm the clone.
After cloning the announcement and assigning a unique tag group to each copy, send each announcement to its corresponding tag group. Each cloned announcement has its own separate reporting under View Stats. To measure the performance of your full campaign, review the stats for each individual announcement separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this article cover?
This article covers how to create and apply tags to clients in Thryv Business Center, how to use tags to filter automated campaigns and announcements, and how to send announcements to audiences larger than 20,000 contacts using tag batches. This article does not cover all campaign creation steps. For a full guide to creating announcements, see How to Send an Announcement by Email in Thryv Business Center. To track the performance of your campaigns after sending, see How to Track Campaign Delivery Metrics in Thryv Business Center.
Will a client receive the same announcement twice if they have more than one of the selected tags?
No. If a client has multiple tags and more than one of those tags is selected as a recipient group for an announcement, the client will receive the announcement only once. Thryv Business Center deduplicates the recipient list automatically before sending.
Will a client automatically receive an automated campaign if they are tagged after the campaign is already running?
Yes, for automated campaigns. Automated campaigns are ongoing and will send to any client who receives the qualifying tag after the campaign is active, as long as the client meets all other campaign conditions. This is different from announcements, which are sent only once at the time you click Send and do not automatically reach clients who are tagged afterward.
Why is a tag I created not appearing in the campaign filter dropdown?
A tag must be assigned to at least one client record before it will appear as an option in the campaign filter dropdown. Create the tag by adding it to a client card first, then return to the campaign to select the tag as a filter.
