Most automated sequences send every contact down the same path. The Email Link Click goal changes that by letting your automation respond to how each contact actually engages with your email. When a contact clicks a specific link in a sequence email, your automation builder can move them to a specific path in your automation sequence or move that contact into a new one automatically, no manual follow-up required.
This means you can build sequences that behave like a real sales or nurturing conversation. One path for someone who clicks "Book a Demo," a completely different path for someone who clicks "Send Me More Info." The automation builder handles the branching for you based on real contact behavior.
If sequence emails include links for more than one call to action, and each call to action transitions the contact to a different sequence, then you will create a goal for each call to action. The contact will go into the next sequence based on their first response.
How to Set Up an Email Link Click Goal in Your Automation Sequence
The Link Clicked Goal must be added to your sequence immediately after a Send Email Then. In addition, this email must already be set up and contain at least one link.
1. Click on the Email link is clicked action under When. and drag it onto your automation sequence, immediately after a sequence containing an email send. Alternatively, click on the + icon next to the email sequence, and then select Email link is clicked from the When drop-down
2. Click on the Email link is clicked action and then click on View and Edit
3. The email from the previous step in the automation sequence will open. Click on the checkbox next to the desired link(s).
Note: If you select more than one link, then clicking on any of the selected links will trigger this automation. It does not require all links being clicked.
4. From here, select either a When or a Then for the next step in your automation. Here is where you decide what happens next for this contact after they click the link in your email. Continue building this path in your automation and click on Publish when finished.
FAQ
What happens if a contact never clicks the link? If a contact never clicks a link that satisfies the Email Link Click goal, the goal is never triggered and the contact remains in the current sequence. If the contact triggers a different goal or is moved to a different path in your automation, they will continue down that path as normal.
What happens if a contact clicks more than one goal link? If a sequence email contains links for more than one call to action, and each call to action transitions the contact to a different sequence, the contact will move into the next sequence based on their first click only. Subsequent clicks on other goal links will not trigger an additional sequence transition.
Does clicking a goal link affect other sequences? Yes. When a contact clicks a link that satisfies the Email Link Click goal, all sequences connected to that goal that occur before it are stopped. Make sure you only select links as goal links when you intend for that click to stop the preceding sequences and move the contact forward.
Can I select more than one link to satisfy the same goal? Yes. You can select multiple links within the same email to satisfy a single Email Link Click goal. Any one of the selected links, when clicked, will trigger the goal.
