When you send marketing emails to your entire contact list, you risk wasting time and budget on people who never wanted to hear from you, and potentially damaging your sender reputation in the process. An email opt-in confirmation sequence lets you filter your list down to contacts who have actively confirmed they want your emails, so every campaign you send goes to an engaged, verified audience.
Contacts who confirm their email address are more likely to open, click, and convert. By building a verified contact list through the automation builder, you protect your deliverability, stay CAN-SPAM compliant automatically, and make sure your marketing efforts are working for your business — not against it.
How to Add an Email Opt-In Confirmation to Your Automation
- Click on Automations in the left-hand menu
- Click the button to create a new automation and choose Advanced Automation
- Name your automation and click Save
- Add a Get email opt-in "Then" onto the canvas. Note that this will open the legacy email builder
- After editing your email, click Done
- The item transforms into an email confirmation request. The sequence is locked to the confirmation goal.
- If you double-click the goal, you will get a message stating that if someone already has a confirmed email address, the sequence will be skipped. In this case, the person will move to the next step in the campaign.
- Double click on the email confirmation request sequence.
- This sequence is designed to be CAN-SPAM compliant and has limited customization options. You cannot add or remove anything from the locked sequence. You may make some changes to your confirmation email by double clicking the item.
- Publish your automation
Add a Reminder to Follow Up with Unconfirmed Contacts
Pro Tip! You can add another email confirmation as a reminder if the contact does not immediately confirm their email address. The purpose of this sequence is to remind the person to confirm their email in order to receive the information they requested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I customize the opt-in confirmation email? You can make limited changes to the confirmation email by double-clicking the email confirmation request step on the automation canvas. You cannot add or remove steps from the confirmation sequence itself. The sequence is locked to protect CAN-SPAM compliance and cannot be modified beyond the available editing options.
What happens if a contact already has a confirmed email address? If a contact already has a confirmed email address on file, the automation builder will skip the email opt-in confirmation sequence automatically and move the contact to the next step in the automation.
What happens if a contact never confirms their email address? If a contact does not confirm their email address, the contact will remain unconfirmed and will not advance past the confirmation sequence. You can add a reminder email to follow up with contacts who have not yet confirmed. For steps on adding a reminder, see the How to Add an Email Opt-In Confirmation to Your Automation section above.
Does this sequence make my emails CAN-SPAM compliant? The email opt-in confirmation sequence is designed to meet CAN-SPAM compliance requirements. The sequence structure and content are locked specifically to maintain that compliance. This article does not cover all CAN-SPAM requirements for your broader email marketing. For general email compliance guidance, consult your legal advisor or review the FTC's CAN-SPAM guidance directly.
What does this article not cover? This article covers adding an email opt-in confirmation "Then" to an automation in the automation builder. It does not cover building standard email sequences, managing your contact list, or what to do after a contact confirms their email address.
