Keap Business Line Verification Requirements
The FCC requires businesses that use text messaging to register their phone numbers with US mobile carriers. This applies to both local numbers and toll-free numbers. Without completed verification, outbound text messages may be blocked or limited. To begin the verification process, submit the business verification form with the required information for your number type.
Local Numbers vs Toll-Free Numbers
There are two types of Keap Business Line numbers — local and toll-free — and they have different registration requirements and timelines.
Local numbers require an EIN (US) or Business Number (Canada) to register. Sole proprietors cannot use an SSN — you must obtain an EIN from the IRS before registering a local number. You can apply for a free EIN through the IRS website. Local number verification takes 1–2 weeks. Outbound text messages will not work during the verification period — they are blocked until verification is fully complete.
Toll-free numbers do not require an EIN or Tax ID to register, making them easier to set up for sole proprietors and businesses without an established EIN. Toll-free number verification also takes 1–2 weeks. However, outbound text messages do work during the toll-free verification period — messages are limited to 2,000 outbound messages per carrier per day while verification is pending.
Local Number Registration Requirements
To register a local number, gather the following information before submitting the verification form. Incomplete or inaccurate information is the most common cause of registration rejection.
EIN or Tax ID — required for all local number registrations. SSNs are not accepted. The legal business name in your registration must exactly match the name on file with the IRS or CRA. A mismatch will result in rejection. Apply for a free EIN through the IRS website if your business does not have one.
Company information — have the following details ready:
- Legal company name (must match IRS or CRA records exactly)
- Country of registration
- EIN (US) or Business Number (Canada)
- Legal company address
- Business phone number
- Business website URL
Organization type — identify whether your organization is publicly traded, a non-profit (501 organization), or privately owned such as an LLC.
Industry — select the vertical that best describes your business industry.
Primary contact — provide the name, title, address, email address, and phone number of the primary contact for your business registration.
End recipient consent — describe how you obtain consent from contacts before sending them text messages. Acceptable consent methods include implied consent, verbal consent, and written consent. If you collect opt-ins through your website, your website must display opt-in and opt-out language — registrations that reference a website without visible opt-in and opt-out information will be rejected by carriers.
Messaging examples — provide sample messages that reflect the types of texts you send or plan to send. If your messages include anything beyond a standard two-way conversation — such as promotional or informational content — include opt-out language at the end of each sample message, for example: "Reply STOP to opt out."
What Happens If Your Registration Is Rejected
If your registration is rejected, Keap will provide the reasons for the rejection. Some rejections can be corrected and resubmitted with updated information. Other rejections — such as those involving content violations related to cannabis (CBD), hate speech, adult content, firearms, or other restricted categories — may not be eligible for resubmission. Review the Keap SMS compliance policy for a full list of prohibited content categories.
Keap Business Line FAQs
Who can I call or text with my Keap Business Line?
Keap Business Line can call or text any US or Canadian phone number. Calls and messages to numbers outside the US and Canada are not supported.
Can I port in a pre-paid phone number?
No. Porting pre-paid phone numbers into Keap Business Line is not currently supported.
I tested my business line and the call went straight to voicemail. Why?
Calling your Keap Business Line number from the same device that receives the forwarded Keap calls will send the call directly to voicemail because the device is registered as busy. Test your business line using a different device to confirm it is working correctly.
Can I have more than one Keap Business Line?
One Keap Business Line number is allowed per Keap account. However, you can set up to five phone numbers to receive incoming calls through call forwarding, and up to five users can be registered to make outbound calls using the same Keap Business Line number.
Can a Canadian Keap Business Line call US numbers, and can US numbers call a Canadian Keap Business Line?
Yes. Keap Business Line supports calls between US and Canadian numbers in both directions regardless of which country the business line number is registered in.
Can I get a US number if I am in Canada, or a Canadian number if I am in the US?
Yes. When selecting your Keap Business Line number, enter the area code for the country and region you want your number to be associated with — your physical location does not restrict which area code you can choose.
Can I port my Keap Business Line number out of Keap?
Yes. You can port your Keap Business Line number out of Keap. Contact support to initiate the porting request. If you are porting your number because you are cancelling your account, be aware that Keap retains phone numbers for up to two weeks after account cancellation. Discuss porting your number with your Customer Success Manager or support team before cancelling to avoid losing access to the number.
