Why Use Promo Codes on Your Checkout Forms
Promo codes give customers a concrete reason to complete a purchase at the moment they are deciding. By creating unique codes for different campaigns — a seasonal sale, a referral partner offer, or a limited-time discount — you turn a standard checkout page into a targeted sales tool. You can also use promo code reporting to track which promotions are driving the most revenue, so you can focus on what works.
How to Create a Promo Code
-
In the left-hand navigation, click Sales and then click Promo Codes to open the Promo Codes page.
-
If this is your first promo code, click Create a Promo Code on the empty state screen. If you already have promo codes, click Add a Promo Code in the top-right corner of the Promo Codes page.
The empty state screen shows Create a Promo Code. Once at least one promo code exists, the button changes to Add a Promo Code in the top-right corner.
-
Enter a Name for the promo code. The name you enter is the exact code your customers must type into the checkout form to apply the discount. The code name also appears in your reporting to identify which code was used on each order.
-
Set the promo code status. Select Active to make the code available for customers to use immediately. Select Inactive to save the code for later use — inactive codes will not work if a customer enters them on a checkout form.
-
Optional: Enter a Description to add internal notes about the purpose of this promo code — for example, which campaign or partner it is associated with. The description is visible to you in reporting but is not shown to customers.
-
Choose the discount type and enter the discount value. Select flat amount to deduct a fixed dollar amount from the order total, or select percentage to discount by a percentage of the order total. Enter the discount value in the field provided.
-
Optional: Set a validity date range to control when the promo code can be used. Enter a start date and an end date to limit the code to a specific promotional period. If you leave the date range empty, the code remains active indefinitely until you manually set it to Inactive.
-
Review the summary at the bottom of the form, which updates in real time as you configure the promo code. When the summary looks correct, click Save to create the promo code.
The summary section shows the complete promo code configuration — code name, status, discount type, discount value, and date range. Clicking Save creates the promo code and adds it to your Promo Codes list.

FAQ
How will promo codes work with recurring products and services?
Promo codes will apply to the first payment of the recurring product. Subsequent payments will be at full price.
How many promo codes can my customers apply on each checkout form?
Only one promo code can be applied at a time.
How are sales taxes calculated when a promo code is applied?
Sales taxes are calculated based on the net total of the invoice. If a promo code is applied, the sales taxes are calculated using the discounted total.
How do I enable promo codes on a checkout form?
In the "setup" step of your checkout form, toggle the promo code on to have the promo code field available for use on your checkout form. If you toggle the promo code field off, your customers will not be able to enter a promo code on that checkout form
How do the active dates on promo codes work?
The promo code will be usable during the range of dates you select. If you only select a start date with no end date, the promo code will work from that day onward. If you do not select a date range, the promo code will work indefinitely until you set it to inactive.
What does making a code inactive do?
If you make a promo code inactive, that promo code will no longer discount any products or services. It's recommended to make a code inactive vs. deleting your code so that you can still view the performance of that code in the future.
Can I enable a promo code ONLY on a specific checkout form?
No. Once a promo code is enabled, it will work on all of your checkout forms.
