Know exactly which contacts can receive your marketing emails — and take action when they cannot. Every email address stored on a contact record in your CRM has an individual email marketability status that determines whether that address can receive your marketing campaigns. Understanding and managing these statuses is essential for protecting your email deliverability. This article covers how to view a contact's email marketability status and how to send a confirmation email to re-engage contacts whose status is blocking them from receiving your marketing emails.
Why Email Marketability Status Affects Your Deliverability
Sending marketing emails to contacts who have not engaged — or who have never confirmed their interest in receiving your emails — signals to inbox providers that your list was not built with proper consent practices. This damages your sender reputation over time, which causes your emails to be filtered to spam or blocked for all of your contacts, including the ones who do want to hear from you.
Each email address stored on a contact record has its own individual marketability status. Reviewing these statuses lets you identify which contacts are eligible to receive your marketing campaigns and which contacts require action — either a confirmation email to re-engage them or removal from your active sending list. Sending a confirmation email asks the contact to actively click a link to confirm they want to receive your emails, which updates their status in your CRM and improves the engagement quality of your list. How to View a Contact's Email Marketability Status
Follow the steps below to find the email marketability status for each email address stored on a contact record.
-
Click Contacts in the left-hand navigation. Then click People from the Contacts submenu. Locate the contact whose status you want to review and click their name to open the contact record.
The screenshot above shows a contact record with the contact's email addresses displayed in the contact details section. Each email address has a marketability status label displayed directly beneath it. The status label indicates whether that specific email address is eligible to receive marketing emails.
-
Review the marketability status displayed beneath each email address on the contact record. Each email address stored on the contact record has its own individual status — a contact with multiple email addresses may have different statuses for each address.
The screenshot above shows the email address section of a contact record with two email addresses displayed. Each address has a marketability status label beneath it. The status label is clickable — clicking the status label opens a panel with options to manage that email address's status, including the option to send a confirmation email for eligible statuses. For a full explanation of each status and what it means, see Email Address Statuses in Keap™ — What Each Status Means.
How to Send a Confirmation Email to a Contact
A confirmation email — also called a double opt-in email — is a message sent to a contact asking them to click a link to confirm they want to receive marketing emails from you. When the contact clicks the confirmation link, their email marketability status in your CRM is updated to Confirmed, making them eligible to receive your marketing campaigns. Sending confirmation emails to unengaged or unconfirmed contacts reduces the number of inactive addresses on your sending list, which improves your overall deliverability.
You can send a confirmation email to contacts whose email address has one of the following four marketability statuses:
Unengaged Marketable — contact has not engaged within the configured threshold but can still receive marketing emails
Unengaged Non-Marketable — contact has not engaged beyond the configured threshold and is blocked from receiving marketing emails
Non-Marketable — contact was added without confirmed marketing permission and cannot receive broadcast or automated marketing emails
Unconfirmed — contact has never confirmed their email address through a double opt-in process
Follow the steps below to send a confirmation email to an individual contact.
Open the contact record for the contact you want to send a confirmation email to by following the steps in the How to View a Contact's Email Marketability Status section above.
-
Click the email marketability status label displayed beneath the email address you want to send the confirmation to. A status management panel opens for that specific email address.
The screenshot above shows the email address section with the marketability status label selected. Clicking the status label opens a status management panel that displays available actions for that email address, including the Send confirmation email option for eligible statuses.
-
Click Send confirmation email in the status management panel. The confirmation email is sent immediately to the contact's email address.
The screenshot above shows the status management panel with the Send confirmation email button visible. Clicking this button sends the standard confirmation email to the contact immediately. The confirmation email cannot be customized — all contacts receive the same standard confirmation email.
-
The contact receives a confirmation email in their inbox asking them to click a link to confirm they want to receive marketing emails from you.
The screenshot above shows the standard confirmation email as it appears to the contact. The email displays your account sender name and includes a confirmation link for the contact to click. The confirmation email is sent from the signature of the Keap™ user who clicked the Send confirmation email button. The email content and format are fixed and cannot be customized.
-
When the contact clicks the confirmation link, they are taken to a confirmation page that acknowledges their email address has been confirmed.
The screenshot above shows the confirmation page the contact sees after clicking the confirmation link. The page displays a success message confirming the email address has been confirmed. No further action is required from the contact after reaching this page.
-
After the contact confirms their email address, the marketability status for that email address on the contact record in your CRM is automatically updated to Confirmed. The contact is now eligible to receive your marketing emails at that address.
The screenshot above shows the contact record after the confirmation is complete. The marketability status label beneath the confirmed email address has been updated to Confirmed. The contact's other email addresses — if they have more than one — retain their individual statuses and are not affected by the confirmation of this address.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this article cover?
This article covers how to view the email marketability status for each email address on a contact record and how to send a confirmation email to re-engage contacts with eligible statuses. This article does not cover bulk re-engagement campaigns, managing email statuses in bulk, or the full list of email status types. To view all email statuses and their meanings, see Email Address Statuses in Keap™ — What Each Status Means. To send a re-engagement email to multiple unengaged contacts at once, see How to Re-engage Unengaged Contacts in Keap™. To view engagement data across your full contact list, see How to Use the Email Engagement Report in Keap™.
Does each email address on a contact record have its own individual marketability status?
Yes. Every email address stored on a contact record has its own individual marketability status. A contact with two email addresses may have a Confirmed status on one address and an Unengaged Marketable status on the other. Sending a confirmation email to one address updates only that address — the other addresses on the contact record are not affected.
Why can I only send confirmation emails to contacts with specific statuses?
The Send confirmation email option is available only for contacts whose email address has one of the following four statuses: Unengaged Marketable, Unengaged Non-Marketable, Non-Marketable, and Unconfirmed. These are the only statuses where a confirmation email can successfully update the contact's status to Confirmed. Sending a confirmation email to an address with any other status — such as Opted Out or Bounced — would not be successful and could not update the status.
Can I customize the confirmation email that is sent to the contact?
No. All contacts receive the same standard confirmation email. The content, format, and subject line of the confirmation email cannot be modified. The email is sent from the signature of the Keap™ user who clicked the Send confirmation email button.
Can I preview the confirmation email before sending it?
The confirmation email cannot be previewed directly from the contact record. To see how the confirmation email appears to a recipient, add yourself as a contact in your CRM with a personal email address, then send a confirmation email to that contact. The confirmation email will be delivered to your personal inbox, allowing you to review its content and appearance before sending it to clients.
Who is the confirmation email sent from?
The confirmation email is sent using the signature of the Keap™ user who clicked the Send confirmation email button on the contact record. If multiple users manage contacts in your account, the confirmation email will reflect the sender identity of whichever user initiates the send.
