This article applies to all Thryv website plans, including the AI Website Builder and Thryv Managed Website.
Overview
A professional blog is your most powerful tool for driving organic traffic and establishing your business as an industry expert. A well-maintained blog is good for a website's SEO. The Thryv Blog Editor is designed to maximize your content's reach while providing complete visual control over your posts.
The editor uses two seamless modes to make blogging easy and professional:
Layout Mode (Consistency): Set the permanent, consistent structure (title, author, image placement) for all your future posts, guaranteeing brand uniformity and proper SEO tagging.
Post Mode (Flexibility): Enjoy full, drag-and-drop design freedom to write individual articles and add any widget—like forms, maps, or buttons—to a specific post.
This powerful dual-mode system ensures that you can focus on writing valuable content while the platform automatically handles the sophisticated design and SEO structure needed to get your business found online.
Smart Design –– Layout Mode
Layout Mode is where you define the structure for all of your blog posts, both current and future. In this mode, you set the layout for elements that appear in every post — such as the blog title, author, and main image. These elements are linked to the content of individual posts, ensuring a consistent structure across all posts. This consistency is important for SEO and makes your blog easier for visitors to navigate.
The space designated for post content in Layout Mode is called the content placeholder. You cannot edit content directly here, but you can add elements around it — for example, columns, rows, and sections above, below, or adjacent to the content placeholder.
Any changes made in Layout Mode will be applied to all posts. For example, if you add a section below the content placeholder in Layout Mode, that section will appear in every blog post exactly as it was set up.
All of the changes you make in Layout Mode affect every blog post.
Flexible Content –– Post Mode
Post Mode is where you write individual blog posts. You have complete freedom over the content of each post — contained within the content placeholder visible in Layout Mode — and can add any widgets you need. Editing a post works just like editing any other page in the editor.
In Post Mode, you can add any elements specific to an individual post. For example, if you are working on a post that includes multiple images, you can add several Image widgets. If a specific post requires a map, simply add a Map widget.
All of the changes you make to an individual post in Post Mode affect only that post.
Creating a New Post
These elements ensure that every blog post automatically includes important details such as the title, author, and main image, and that these details appear consistently across all posts.
When you create a new post, you will be prompted to enter the main post details. You can update this information later, but adding it from the start helps keep your posts organized.
By default, the post title, author, and background image are linked. You can remove or modify these connections in Layout Mode; however, we recommend keeping them to ensure your posts contain all the information needed for SEO and to be easily found by readers.
If you disconnect an element, you can reconnect it or link it to a new element at any time.
Changing Connected Elements
There are two ways to update connected elements in your blog: by changing the content in Post Mode, or by modifying the connection in Layout Mode.
Changing Connections in Post Mode
You can update the content of connected elements in one of the following ways:
- Via the Settings menu: Click to open the post details and make your edits.
- Via the element itself: Click the connected elem.
Changing Connections in Layout Mode
You can replace or remove connected elements in Layout Mode. To replace a connected element, click the Connected Data icon to open the Connect Data pop-up. From here, select the element you want to use for this connection and click Done.
To remove the connection entirely, select None. This will remove the connection across all posts in the blog, and the element will no longer appear.
Manage Posts
Go to Manage Posts to do the following:
- Create new posts
- Access post settings via the gear icon
- Search posts by title or author
- Sort posts by status — draft or published

Post Settings
Access the Post Settings for any post via the gear icon that appears beside the post name in Manage Posts. From here, you can navigate between posts using the arrows at the top of the page.
Post Settings is divided into three sections: Post Status, Post Details, and Post Metadata. Here is what you can do in each section.

From here, you can:
- Unpublish or publish a post
- Find and set the post URL
- Change the post publish date (note that changing the date will affect the position of the post on the Manage Posts page)
For more, see Setting Post Status.
Post Details
From here, you can add and edit the following main post details:
- Post title
- Post author
- Post main image
By default, these details are required for every blog post and are linked to the layout to maintain a consistent design.
For more, see Setting Post Details.
Post Metadata
From here, you can:
- Set the post thumbnail and alt tag
- Set the post description
- Set post tags
Metadata is important for SEO as it helps search engines understand the content of a page. In the blog, the text you add in the metadata fields is displayed in the All Posts and Recent Posts widgets and appears when posts are shared. It is highly recommended to fill in all metadata fields.
For more, see Setting Post Metadata.
Blog Settings
When you create a new blog, a pop up will appear that prompts you to name the blog and set a thumbnail, title and description for it. All of these details can be changed later in Blog Settings. This information is also used in RSS feeds.
