How to Add the Upload a File Widget to Your Website
Add the Upload a File Widget to a page on your Thryv website using the website editor. To learn how to place a widget on your website page, see Add Widgets to Your Thryv Website. Once the Upload a File Widget is placed on the page, the Content Editor panel will open automatically on the right side of the editor.
How to Customize the Download Button Text
The Content Editor panel lets you change the text that appears on the download button visitors see on your website. In the Content Editor panel, locate the button text field and type the label you want to display on the download button. Choose button text that clearly communicates what the visitor is downloading, for example, "Download Our Price List" or "Get the Free Guide", to encourage more clicks. After updating the button text, proceed to add a file using the steps in the next section.
How to Upload a File to the Widget
To add a file to the Upload a File Widget, click the + File button in the Content Editor panel. The Uploaded Files window will open. In the Uploaded Files window, click + Upload Files to open the file selection screen. You can add multiple files to upload at the same time, all selected files will be uploaded in a single batch.
On the file selection screen, add your files using one of the following methods: drag your files directly onto the file selection area, click the Select Files to Upload button to browse your computer's file system and select files or connect to an external source. Files can be uploaded from your computer or imported directly from Facebook, Dropbox or Google Drive using the external source options on the file selection screen.
After selecting your files, click Upload to begin uploading the selected files. If you want to add more files before uploading, click Upload more to return to the file selection screen and select additional files. All selected files will upload together when you click Upload.
When the upload is complete, a success notification will appear confirming the files have been uploaded. The uploaded file will now appear in the Content Editor panel and is immediately available for visitors to download from your website. No additional steps are required to make the file available after the upload completes.
How to Customize the Download Button Design
The Design Editor controls the visual appearance and spacing of the download button on your website page. To open the Design Editor for the Upload a File Widget, click the Design tab in the top-left corner of the editor panel. The Design Editor is organized into three sections: Layout, Style, and Spacing. Use the Layout section to change the overall arrangement of the download button as it appears on your page. Use the Style section to adjust the width and height of the button and to change the border style. Use the Spacing section to customize the padding and margins, the space between the download button and the surrounding content on the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file formats can be uploaded to the Upload a File Widget?
The Upload a File Widget supports the following file formats: .pdf, .xls, .xlsx, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .psd, .txt, .xml, .mp3, .ttf, .otf, .woff, .eot, .svg, .odt, .ott, .js, .css, .png, .jpg, .gif, .jpeg and .rar. Both lowercase and uppercase file extensions are accepted (for example, .pdf and .PDF are both valid). If your file is in a format not listed here, the Upload a File Widget will not accept the file.
Are there any file naming requirements?
Yes. File names must use only standardized characters, specifically letters a through z and numbers 1 through 9. File names that include special characters, symbols, spaces or accented characters will not be recognized by the website editor and cannot be uploaded. Before uploading a file, rename the file to include only standard letters and numbers if the current file name includes any other characters.
Can visitors share the download link with others?
Yes. Once a file is published on your website through the Upload a File Widget, visitors can share the download link through email, social media or any other channel without your knowledge. Any file you make available for download on your website should be treated as public content. Do not upload files that contain sensitive, confidential or personal information. If you want to restrict access to a file, do not use the Upload a File Widget, use a password-protected page or a gated form instead.
What are the copyright rules for files I upload?
Upload only files that you created yourself or that you have explicit permission to distribute. Never upload files that contain copyrighted content such as images, text or documents, that you do not own or do not have a license to distribute. Uploading copyrighted material without permission is a violation of copyright law regardless of whether the file is freely distributed on your website.
Is there a maximum file size for uploads?
Yes. In Thryv Business Center, the maximum upload size depends on where you’re uploading the file.
- Documents (and document attachments like on estimates and invoices): 20 MB per file. If it’s larger, you’ll need to compress it or split it into smaller files first.
- Files uploaded to a contact record: 10 MB per file.
Can I upload multiple files and have each one linked to a separate download button?
Yes. You can upload multiple files and have each one linked to its own download button (or download link).
In an email (Broadcast or Advanced Automation), add a separate Button for each file and set each button’s Action Type to File download, then upload or select the matching file for that button.
On your website, use the Upload a File widget and add multiple files. Each file you upload can be downloaded by visitors, and you can set a button destination to File for download for each file.
Note: email file downloads currently support PDF and XLSX, and the total file size limit for all attachments in an email is 10 MB combined.
