Why Tracking Website Acquisition Data Helps Your Business Grow
Knowing how visitors find your website is one of the most valuable insights you can have as a business owner. The Acquisition page in Google Analytics shows you which channels are driving traffic to your website — whether that is organic search, social media, direct visits, or other sources. Understanding where your visitors come from helps you invest your marketing efforts in the channels that are actually working, identify underperforming channels, and see how visitor behavior changes depending on how they found your site. All of this data is available directly inside your Thryv AEO & SEO dashboard without needing to leave your account.
How to Access the Acquisition Page
To access the Acquisition page, click AEO & SEO in the left-hand navigation. Then click Google Analytics. Then click Acquisition. The Acquisition page displays data about how visitors are finding your website and how they are behaving once they arrive.
How to Filter and Customize the Data Displayed
Changing the date range
To change the date range for the data displayed on the Acquisition page, select a preset date range in the top-right corner of the screen, set a custom date range, or compare two different date ranges side by side. Changing the date range updates all charts and data on the Acquisition page.
Filtering by traffic channel
To filter the data displayed by the channel a visitor used to access your website, click one of the channel buttons at the top of the Acquisition page. Selecting a channel updates all charts and data on the page to display only visitors who arrived through that channel. Available channels include options such as organic search, social, direct, and others depending on your website's traffic sources.
Understanding the Metrics Chart
The metrics chart displays your website's performance data over your selected date range. Click on any of the following metrics to change the data displayed in the chart. Hover over a specific point in the chart to see the data for that time period:
- Sessions, the total number of visits to your website during the selected date range
- Total Users, the total number of unique visitors to your website during the selected date range
- Avg Engagement Time, the average amount of time a visitor spends on your website per session
- Views, the total number of pages viewed across all sessions. If a visitor views multiple pages in one session, each page view is counted individually
- Conversions, the number of times a visitor completes an action on your website, such as making a payment or scheduling an appointment
- Event Count, the total number of individual actions taken on your website by all visitors during the selected date range
Understanding the Detailed Data Table
Below the metrics chart, a detailed data table displays additional information based on the channel selected at the top of the Acquisition page. The data available in the table changes depending on which channel filter is active:
- Organic Search selected, the table displays the search engines and keywords visitors used to find your website
- Social selected, the table displays the social platforms visitors used and the pages they first landed on when they arrived at your website
- No channel filter selected, the table displays a breakdown of all traffic sources and their associated metrics
Use the detailed data table to gain deeper insight into how visitors are finding your website through each channel, and to identify whether the method visitors use to access your site affects their behavior once they arrive.
