Your website might be generating leads even when a visitor never fills out a form. Many visitors go straight to the phone instead. A Trackable Phone Number lets you measure how many calls your website is actually producing, not just form submissions.
This article covers how to add a Trackable Phone Number to your website and read the call data it generates. This article does not cover creating a Trackable Phone Number step by step — see Trackable Phone Numbers for that — or tracking calls from email campaigns or ads, covered in their own articles.
Benefits of Tracking Calls from Your Website
If you're investing time or money into your website, or sending traffic to it from ads, you need a way to answer one question: is your website generating phone leads? Form submissions only tell part of the story, since many visitors will call instead of filling out a contact form.
A Trackable Phone Number closes that gap. Adding one to your website lets you prove that your website is producing results, understand which pages drive the most calls, and improve your site based on how customers actually behave, not just on form submission counts.
When to Use a Trackable Phone Number on Your Website
Add a Trackable Phone Number anywhere on your website that prompts a visitor to call, including your website header, your contact page, and any "Call Now" buttons or call-to-action sections.
How to Set Up a Trackable Phone Number for Your Website
Click Trackable Phone Number in the left-hand navigation, then click Track New to create a number. For step-by-step instructions on creating a Trackable Phone Number and choosing a destination number, see Trackable Phone Numbers.
When naming the campaign in the Create a Trackable Phone Number window, use a name that identifies it as a website number — for example, "Website – Main." This makes it easy to find later in your Trackable Phone Numbers list, alongside numbers you're using for email or ads.
Once the number is created, add it to your website wherever customers are prompted to call, whether your site is built with Thryv or with another website platform. Use one number for your main website traffic whenever possible, so your reporting reflects overall website call activity rather than being split across multiple numbers.
Keep Your Permanent Number in Your Footer
Do not replace every phone number on your website with your Trackable Phone Number. Directories like your Google Business Profile and Yelp already have your permanent business number on file. If your website suddenly shows a different number everywhere, it creates a mismatch between your website and those directories, which can confuse both the directories and search engines like Google.
Keep your permanent business number in one consistent spot on your website, such as the footer, and use your Trackable Phone Number only in the header, contact page, or call-to-action sections. This keeps your website consistent with your other online listings while still letting you measure calls from the sections where customers are prompted to act.
Best Practices for Website Call Tracking Numbers
If you run multiple campaigns to different landing pages, consider using a different Trackable Phone Number on each landing page so you can measure their performance separately. Keep your website number separate from any numbers used for Google Ads, social ads, or email campaigns, since mixing channels together makes it impossible to tell which one drove a given call. Label each number clearly when you create it, for example, "Website – Main," so it's easy to identify later in your reporting.
What You Can Track from Website Call Activity
To view call data for a specific number, click the campaign name for that number on the Trackable Phone Numbers page.
This opens a detail page showing four metrics: Calls (the total number of calls received), Unique Calls (calls from distinct phone numbers), Avg. Calls Weekly (average call volume per week), and Avg. Call Duration (average length of calls received).
Below the metrics, the Received Calls section lists every call made to that number. You can search by phone number or sort the list, and each call can be opened to listen to its recording.
Call data updates once every 24 hours, so calls received today won't appear in your reporting until the next sync.
FAQ
Should I replace my footer phone number with a Trackable Phone Number?
No. Keep your permanent business number in your footer so it stays consistent with your Google Business Profile, Yelp, and other online listings. Use your Trackable Phone Number in your header, contact page, or call-to-action sections instead.
Can I use different Trackable Phone Numbers on different pages of my website?
Yes. If you're running campaigns to different landing pages, using a separate number on each page lets you measure their performance individually rather than combining them into one total.
Is there a limit to how many Trackable Phone Numbers I can create?
Yes. You can have up to 5 Trackable Phone Numbers at a time, shared across all your campaigns, including any you use for your website. See Trackable Phone Numbers for details on managing your numbers.
Does a Trackable Phone Number cost anything?
No. Trackable Phone Numbers are included with your Thryv account at no additional cost.
How often does my call data update?
Call data syncs every 24 hours. If you don't see a recent call reflected yet, check back the next day.
